DEPARTURE FROM KATHMANDU

The Tharpu Chuli Climbing trip is considered basic mountaineering. But due to the high elevation, it is a challenging mountain requiring preparation and training. A.T. Adventures will offer to climb Tharpu Chuli with basic-level climbers – and those who are interested in climbing but are without prior training.

We are trying to make the Tharpu Chuli Climb more comfortable by adding an acclimatize trip to Everest Base Camp (5160m) and Kalapatthar (5545m) before attempting Tharpu Chuli. Everyone may attempt to climb Tharpu Chuli without bottled oxygen.

We will have a day training at Tharpu Chuli high camp for those who have not climbed or had prior training. They will be training to use ice axes, jumars, ascenders, descenders, crampons, rope fixing, climbing vertically on the ice, belaying and all the techniques of basic ice climbing. The approach to climb Tharpu Chuli is an alpine of simple to moderate difficulty, where one will have the opportunity to be trained on proper technique for using climbing mechanisms on high mountains.

Tharpu Chuli is often taken as pre-preparation for Mt. Everest. These guidelines will help you to be more comfortable while ascending to the peak.

Basic Training to attempt Tharpu Chuli

  • One should be able to hike for 6-7 hours a day.
  • One should be able to carry a 35lb backpack.
  • We suggest you run about 4/5 miles at home with some load on your back for 2 to 3 months in preparation for this climb.
  • You may also use a treadmill (with incline adjustments) for everyday running and walking training.
  • If you have an uphill location/mountain, then once a week you should go hiking with a loaded/packed backpack.
  • If you do not have mountains or nearby high hills, then use stairs to go up/down whenever you can, rather than using elevators.
