Ama Dablam Expedition History
Ama Dablam was first climbed on March 13, 1961, by Mike Gill (NZ), Barry Bishop (USA), Mike Ward (UK) and Wally Romanes (NZ) via the Southwest Ridge. They were well-acclimatized to altitude, having wintered over at 5800 meters near the base of the peak as part of the Silver Hut Scientific Expedition of 1960-61, led by Sir Edmund Hillary.
ARRIVAL IN KATHMANDU
CITY TOUR OF BOUDHA, PASHUPATI, PATAN AND SWOYAMBHU
In the morning after having breakfast we begin the tour around Kathmandu with an English-speaking guide. During the day you will cover some of the historical and religious, world heritage sites;
Swoyambhunath –“the Self Existing One’. The oldest Buddhist stupa of Nepal situated in the small hill, from where you can see the nice view of Kathmandu valley. Historians believe that it has the oldest history of Kathmandu. No sooner than you enter the periphery of Swoyambhunath you will see the monks, chanting religious words and monkeys chattering and hanging around the different temple and trees. It is also known as monkey temple, a name given by the tourist.
Bouddha nath Stupa: the ancient stupa of Boudhanath is one of the biggest Buddhist stupa of Nepal, situated in the northern part of Kathmandu valley, which is one of the trading routes of Nepal with Tibet during ancient times. Tibetan merchants used to take rest and offers praying in this place during their trading time. Later when Tibetan refugees enter Nepal in 1950s, most of them decided to stay around the same place. Even now most of the monk in Boudhanath is from Tibet. Around the stupa you can see some Buddhist painting school of traditional paints “Thanka”.
Pashupatinath Temple: Pashupatinath the national deity of Nepal is one of the most significant Hindu temples of Lord Shiva in the world, located on the banks of the Bagmati River in the eastern part of Kathmandu. The word Pashupatinath is derived from three Sanskrit words: “pashu” means organism, “pati” means protector, and “nath” means Lord. Hence in Hindu mythology Pashupatinath means protector and Lord of all living things. The bank of Bagmati River is the cremation center for the Hindu dead. You can see the cremation process of the Hindu people at this location. Beside this you can see the color full sadhu ‘the holy devotee of Lord Shiva’ around the periphery of temple.
After sightseeing, you will return and prepare your pack, clothing and gear for the Ama Dablam trekking adventure. The trekking guide will meet you and give you instructions for the next day.

DEPARTURE
The Ama Dablam Climbing trip is considered mixed rock and ice climbing mountaineering.
But due to the high elevation, it is a challenging mountain requiring preparation and training. A.T. Adventures will offer to climb Ama Dablam with basic-level climbers – and those who are interested in climbing but are without prior training.
We are trying to make the Ama Dablam Climb more comfortable by adding an acclimatize trip to Everest Base Camp (5160m) and Kalapatthar (5545m) before attempting Ama Dablam. Everyone may attempt to climb Ama Dablam without bottled oxygen.
We will have a day training at Ama Dablam high camp for those who have not climbed or had prior training. They will be training to use ice axes, jumars, ascenders, descenders, crampons, rope fixing, climbing vertically on the ice, belaying and all the techniques of basic ice climbing. The approach to climb Ama Dablam is an alpine of simple to moderate difficulty, where one will have the opportunity to be trained on proper technique for using climbing mechanisms on high mountains.
Ama Dablam is often taken as pre-preparation for Mt. Everest. These guidelines will help you to be more comfortable while ascending to the peak.
Basic Training to attempt Ama Dablam
- One should be able to hike for 6-7 hours a day.
- One should be able to carry a 35lb backpack.
