The Lemosho Route via The Crater – 7 Nights/8 Days
The Lemosho Route is the route that is furthest from Moshi on the far west of the mountain, and the drive to the start of the trek takes over two hours. The vehicle drives on a narrow road through farmland. You will pass busy villages and maize and vegetable fields.
This is a very scenic route and you walk through a series of valleys, and up to Mti Mkubwa Camp you will bee accompanied by an armed ranger in case you meet elephants, buffalo or other big game. You will often see Black & White Colobus Monkeys and Blue Monkeys in the forest.
On this variation of the Lemosho Route, you have the option of sleeping in the Crater and will be going up the Western Breach. This option is only for those who are very fit and used to high altitudes.
You will be met by some of your team at the Airport and transferred to your hotel or you will be driven to your hotel after completing the Safari or other adventures in time for dinner. After that your guide will brief you and you will have time to prepare your bags for tomorrows climb. Put all that you need for the summit, and the higher altitudes in a waterproof bag (max 16 kgs / 35 lbs), which will be carried by the porters throughout the climb. Your personal belongings, camera, passport, anything you need while hiking will go into your small waterproof day pack. –Anything you need for the rest of your holiday can be left with us and locked in our office lock up.

Day 1 : Moshi to Londorossi Park Gate to Mti Mkubwa Camp (2,750m / 9,022ft)
After breakfast, we drive to Londorossi Park Gate ( 2,250 m / 7,381ft) a drive of over 2 hours. From here a rough forest road requiring a 4X4 leads to Lemosho Glades ( 2,390 m / 7,841ft, 11km / 6.84 miles, 45 minutes). Walk along forest trails to Mti Mkubwa (big tree) campsite. You will see Black & White Colobus monkeys, Blue Monkeys and maybe elephants on the way
Day 2 : Mti Mkubwa Camp to Shira 1 Camp (3,500m / 11,483ft)
After breakfast, we continue as the trail gradually steepens and enters the giant heather moorland zone. After several streams are crossed we continue over the Shira Ridge (3,600m / 11,811ft) then gently downwards to Shira 1 camp located by a stream on the Shira Plateau. About 5 to 6 hours of steady hiking, with a hot lunch on, route to the Shira 1 Camp, where we stay for the night.
Day 3 : Shira 1 Camp to Moir Camp (3,950m / 12,959ft)
After breakfast, a gentle hike across the plateau leads to Moir camp (3,950m / 12,959ft) on moorland meadows by a stream. The Shira Plateau is a World Heritage Site. The Camp is set amidst a typical upland moorland landscape with rough vegetation of Giant Senecons. There is a good view of Kilimanjaro’s upper slopes from here.5 to 6 hours walking
Day 4: To the Lava Tower (4, 600m’ 15,091ft)
Today we will hike approximately 6 hours to camp just under Lava Tower, a 4600m / 15,091ft high volcanic lava plug that juts out of the side of the mountain. This will be our first introduction to the alpine zone, with the only plant life being the hardiest of grasses and lichens. We will have a spectacular view of our final ascent route up the Western Breach.
Day 5: From the Lava Tower Camp to the Arrow GlacierCamp (4,850m / 15,912ft)
With the Western Breach ascent route in full view we will spend 2 hours climbing to the
base of the route where we will camp near Arrow Glacier. An afternoon hike
further up the route before relaxing in camp will help our acclimatization
and improve our performance the following day.
Day 6:From the Arrow Glacier Camp to the Summit Crater camp (5,745m / 18,848ft)
We will wind our way up the Western Breach non-technical climbing route for about six hours to the crater rim of the main Kilimanjaro massif. Those who still have the energy can explore the inner crater and the ash pit before moving to our highest camp on the crater floor .This spectacular high camp is next to the Furtwangler Glacier with stunning views westward toward Mt. Meru and the setting African sun.
Day 7: To Uhuru Peak (5,895m / 19,340ft)
We will start our ascent to the summit (5895m / 19,340ft) early enough in the morning to be on the summit by 10:00am. This final ascent is only 150m / 492ft and can be undertaken after sunrise and a leisurely breakfast if you are spending a night in the crater. This is quite a contrast to the long and arduous foot slog required to summit via all the other ascent routes on Kilimanjaro.
From Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp (3,100m / 10,170ft)
After taking in the view from Uhuru Peak we will begin the long descent to Barafu Hut for lunch and a short rest and then down to our final camp near Mweka Hut. on the edge of the tropical rain forest zone.
Day 8 : Mweka Camp to Moshi
After breakfast, we continue the descent down to the Mweka Park Gate. At lower elevations, it can be wet and muddy. Gaiters and trekking poles will help. Shorts and t-shirts will probably be plenty to wear (keep rain gear and warmer clothing handy). A vehicle will meet you at Mweka village to drive you back to your hotel. You will get your certificate (hopefully) It is time for celebration! 5 hours walking
On the next day, you will be driven back to the airport for your flight home, leave on one of our safaris, or fly onwards to the island paradise of Zanzibar
